Briton sues prison after fellow inmate slashes throat

    (IANS)

A British prisoner has sued the prison service for a sum of 100,000 pounds after his throat was allegedly slashed by a fellow inmate.

Ian Huntley, 36, is serving a life sentence for the 2002 murders of two 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Cambridgeshire, 70 km from London.

Huntley, a former school caretaker, claims his throat was slashed with a razor blade by an inmate - Damien Fowkes - at the high security Frankland Prison in Durham March 21.

Fowkes is serving a life sentence for knifepoint robbery.

Huntley is demanding almost 100,000 pounds in damages - 20,000 pounds for his injuries and the rest of the amount in punitive damages, the Guardian reported.

The ministry of justice said the prison service failed in their duty to take care of him.

'Ian Huntley is bringing a claim against the ministry of justice following an assault by another prisoner,' a ministry spokesman said.

Someone had earlier thrown boiling water on Huntley, while in yet another incident, he narrowly escaped being stabbed and was badly assaulted.
